Days 2-3

Wow. What a place.

We have sent construction teams to build the 2nd floor on the CCED school. When they are not hauling block, mixing concrete and building walls, they are surrounded by lush green mountains. Sort of looks like home.

The VBS team has now had two days of Bible Study - David and Goliath and the story of Moses. We remembered so many of the kids - and they continue to bless us with their smiles, hugs and laughs. Photos coming soon.

The new guest house hosts are great fun - and full of energy. This is really a wonderful place to be this week and we all feel so blessed to be here.

Rumor has it we will be playing softball tomorrow against a DR team. YIKES. Could be hilarious!

Dominican Republic Day One!

Hola from the Dominican Republic! We arrived safely last night in Santo Domingo from a long day of traveling. This morning we drove to San Juan and saw beautiful scenery on the way! We arrived at the guest house with a warm welcome from the new solid rock couple. After a day of planning and resting, we had dinner and went to an Evangelical Church service, all of which was in Spanish. Although there was a language barrier, we could feel the worship and fellowship through music and prayer. Tonight we will rest up for a long day of working with children in El Rosario and working construction near the guest house. Thanks for your prayers!

Day 5- A Day of Song

Music seemed to follow our group everywhere today. The Campos team started the morning by singing with the children in the clinic receiving medicine to teach them how to take it properly. They also sang during lunchtime with the children about God. We saw 120 patients today and distributed vitamins to many more children.

The Operating Room was extremely busy today. There were 11 cases completed today and Chris Waldrop, the youngest member of our team, has scrubbed in on several cases and assisted with anesthesia today.

After a delicious dinner the group loaded up on the trucks to head to church. The members of our team who have sponsored students had the opportunity to meet them today and spend time with them. Our group took communion and Liz Toland translated the sermon given by the pastor, Jorge. Our evening was ended in song, just as it began.

Day 4- Another Day Full

After attending flagraising and a tour at the CCED school, funded in part by Solid Rock, our teams went their separate ways to start their day.

Today the Campos team ventured to the Southwest again to a school about an hour and a half away to set up a clinic. There the team saw and treated about 90 patients and passed out vitamins to at least 50 additional children.

Today the Operating Room was very busy with 10 surgeries that included a hernia repair by Dr. Madge Ellis, a hystorectomy done by Dr. Mark Gustafson, and a hand reconstruction done by Dr. Hagan. The schedule for the week was filled up today.

We finished off our day with dinner at a local restaurant and ice cream from a local shop.

Day 3- Our First Full day of Campos Teams, Consultations & a Bit of Surgery

Early Wake Up Call

After an early wake up with the roosters and a hearty breakfast our teams were ready to go. The Campos teams headed Southwest towards the Haitian border near El Cercado and the OR teams set up clinics for morning consultations and scrubbed in this afternoon for some surgeries.

The Campos team saw about 125 patients today spanning the ages of 6 month to 70 year olds. Dr. Cindy Johns and Suzanne Fischer mainly handled the adults while Dr. Russ Delaney learned how to navigate pediatric treatment while out in the countryside. Vitamins were provided for each patient along with additional treatments as needed by Teri Bryant. The team of nurses and translators, foreign and domestic, were also a great help.

At the clinic Dr. Mann, Waldrop, and Hagans all had orthopedic consultations and scheduled about 12 casees. They have nearly filled their schedules for the week and only have a few slots left for Thursday afternoon cases. Today the nurses & doctors saw many trauma injuries as well as congenital deformities.

All the while Bob Williams and David Rupp, the president of Solid Rock Missions, were touring the surrounding neighborhoods lead by Corra Hunse. Corra is involved with the Child Nutrition Program and was showing them the long-term, positive results of the program that are really beginning to develop. They made one stop to see a family of 17 children and thanks to the program, which is going strong, those children were able to receive the nutritional assistance that their family would not have been able to afford otherwise.

Day 2- Getting Settled and Unpacked

San Juan de la Maguana

After a long journey, one that was extended for some due to flight cancellations, our whole team has made it to the Guesthouse in San Juan. While in Santo Domingo we met with our church's sponsored medical student, Miguelina. She just graduated from medical school and we presented her with a graduation gift over breakfast before leaving for San Juan. Our church's ministerial intern, Elizabeth Toland, has joined us and is serving as our spiritual leader and is doing a great job. She will be leading the Bibles & Bricks trip to San Juan this July.

This afternoon everyone was in the process of unpacking surgical supplies and organizing medications and multivitamins. We are prepared to start early tomorrow with half of our group doing consultations at the clinic at the Guesthouse and the other half going into the surrounding areas to run a sattelite clinic.

Wheels Up! We departed the church at 7 this morning for Raleigh and have touched down in Miami. Our flight is scheduled to leave on time at 5: 30 for Santo Domingo and everyone is ready to get there! We will try to make a post from Santo Domingo when we land.

Dominican Republic 2011

After two consecutive Monday night packing meetings our group is ready to go!!
Tomorrow we will be meeting at the church to load up the bus in preparation for our 7:00 AM departure Saturday morning. We hope to reach Santo Domingo around 8:30 PM (7:30 EST) Saturday evening!

Upon arrival Monday at the Guesthouse in San Juan de la Maguana we are expecting weather in the 80's and partly cloudy skies all week. I will be posting daily updates from sunny San Juan, so stay tuned for photos of our group in action!

Day 4

It is hard to believe that our trip is almost over. We have accomplished so much in such a short time, but there is always more to do here. Today our barrios team went to one sight and saw around 150 patients. The surgeons have been very busy and performed 6 surgeries today. The patients and their families have been so grateful. Construction finished the walkways to the lower classrooms and they look great! This afternoon a couple of groups of people enjoyed walking into San Juan and visiting the cathedral. We are looking forward to a Dominican-style dinner in town tonight followed by a trip to the ice cream store. We hope everyone has enjoyed keeping up with our journey. This has been a great week!

Today was a very busy day. The barrios teams saw over 300 patients. The clinic stayed busy all day and into the evening performing surgeries. Our construction team continued pouring sidewalks and laying block. Prosthetics delivered most of the remaining prostheses and did some fittings. Everything is moving along as planned!

Today was a very busy day. Our surgical team screened patients that will be having surgery this week and performed 7 surgeries. One team went to the barrios and saw 170 patients. The patients ranged in age from 3 months to 100 years old. Our construction team had a busy day as well. They poured 20 feet of sidewalk and laid a foundation for a storage shed. The prosthetic team saw 19 people today. Twelve of these patients received their prostheses and 7 were fitted for next year. It was very rewarding to see the end result. One man had not walked without crutches for 9 years. He was thrilled! We are looking forward to another busy day tomorrow. We will be sending out 2 teams to the barrios tomorrow, and we have many surgeries scheduled. The construction will continue working on sidewalks, and the prosthetic team hopes to deliver the remaining prostheses and fit more patients.

Hello from the Dominican Republic! Our trip started out snowy in Roanoke but changed to rain as we got to North Carolina. The flights were uneventful and everyone and all bags arrived safely on Saturday afternoon. After spending the night in Santo Domingo, we got up Sunday and headed for San Juan. We arrived at lunchtime, got settled into our rooms, and began organizing the clinic, construction site, etc.. Our main evening activity was counting and bagging vitamins and medicines to take to the barrios. We are all enjoying the nice warm weather and are getting ready to start work tomorrow! Here are some pictures from the last couple of days.

End of the Road ....

We had a very long 5-1/2 hour bus ride Friday from San Juan to Santo Domingo due to heavy traffic, parades, bike races, etc! One bus stopped in El Rosario to give out gifts to the sponsored children and to show Bob Williams the kitchen addition and the monument in his honor (picture coming later). What a great visit with the kids - especially Tim Bibee's child leaping into Tim's arms when he realized the connection between Tim and the Bibee's son Holt!

Thursday, February 12th

Medical

Today was very busy with Surguries at the Clinic and the two Barrios teams again heading west approximately one hour from San Juan. The teams and Surgeons were able to complete the day earlier than normal (all before dinner) so that everyone would have time to wrap up and pack up. A meaningful devotional by George was followed by a time for anyone to share their experiences here in the DR. We are all very grateful to Joe and Shannon for being wonderful hosts at the Guest House.

In total, the group treated 1,322 patients at the Barrios, conducted 37 Surgical Procedures, fitted 4 prosthesis and sized 23 additional patients for future fitting!

In the morning, some of us are heading to El Rosario to meet with sponsored students, while a second bus will return directly to Santo Domingo.

Thursday, February 12th

Construction

Wow, what a full, great day! The day started with a trip

to the market. We then went on to El Rosario and finished

everything we had scheduled, including hanging the cross

Fenton Childress made. Some of us then returned and

travelled in the pickup to El Cecada ( an hour away in the

mountains), to see the school there that is also supported

by Solid Rock. Tonight concluded with a wonderful devotional

by George and a time of reflections by many in our group.

We travel back to Santo Domingo Friday, then fly home

Saturday Morning and arrive late in Roanoke.

- Mission Accomplished !

Tuesday, February 10th
Construction

Things are going well with the kitchen - we completed
the blockwork on both the gable and the partition wall.
Most of the exterior got stucco'd today, and we have the
top plates cut that will hold the rafters.

Tommorow we hope to set rafters, form and pour a
beam at the top of the gable wall (concrete going up
in buckets), pour an entry stoop, and block in the
opening to the kitchen.

February 9th

Construction

The floor was poured and finished today which included running a water line and piping for two drains. Javiel and Jose (Randy's brother) helped us mix and wheelbarrow the concrete. In the afternoon, we prepped for Tuesday while Fred diligently worked on finishing a very sandy concrete. We hope to lay block for both a partition wall and the triangular part of the gable wall tommorow.

A beautiful clear morning was followed by a passing shower, and cool nights in the lower 60's.

It was very exciting yesterday to see our completed classroom building - WOW see it below!

February 9th

Medical:

Two medical teams saw 280 patients today in the barrios. In the clinic, a young lady walked in on crutches and out with her first prosthesis - see the pictures below! Our surgical team interviewed prospective patients today, performed three surgeries and are expecting a very busy week.

Our group arrived safely in San Juan de la Maguana today after leaving Santo Domingo in a very light rain around 9:00 AM which quickly cleared and turned into a very pleasant Domincan day. After a quick lunch at the Guesthouse, our team went to work in the Clinic setting up the operating rooms, sorting and packing medications for our barrio teams while our construction team and numerous first timers traveled to El Rosario to observe the kitchen project and lay plans for the week ahead.

After another great dinner, we were welcomed by Dr. Oswaldo Canario, Clinic Director who expressed his heartful thanks for what he termed one of the most most diverse and best medical teams he has seen in a long time. Dr Canario was especially appreciative of the Virginia Prosthetics team noting there was an immense need for protheses in the Dominican Republic.

George concluded our first evening with devotions after which everyone made final preparations for a busy Monday.

On Our Way ...
We are off! Departing the Church at 4pm Friday, February 6th and travelling to Raleigh for a 6am (7am DR time) flight through Miami and arriving in Santo Domingo Saturday afternoon at 1:20pm. We will then overnight before continuing on to San Juan de la Maguana, arriving at the Guest House Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:30pm.

We arrived safely back in Roanoke on February 16th around 9:00 pm. Thank you for your comments, thoughts, prayers and warm welcome home. What an amazing trip! I already miss saying hola to our Domican friends.
Much was accomplished on the trip and here are some of the numbers behind a lot of hard work:

50 surgeries
1530 Barrio patients seen
140 cinder blocks laid
2 loads of sand mixed for cement and concrete
1 load of gravel shoveld in place
12x12x25 footers for the kitchen

Although productivity is very important, this trip is not just about the numbers. It's about meeting and working with people. Making new friendships and deepening existing ones.
Sharing tears and laughter with your team and with people that don't even speak the same language - everyone understands a smile, a hug and duck duck goose! (we could not of done it without our interpreters) It's about working together and reaching out to care for those that truly need help. But at the end of the week, you discover that it is the Dominican people that helped you. The New Testament scripture read at Youth Sunday says it so well - Luke 12:22-34

Over the past two days, each of the barrio teams have seen approx. 400 hundred patients. The first day, Team 1 went out to SOSA, Jinova, and Team 2 went to Los Montones, Jinova. The second day, there were the same teams. Team 1 went to La Meseta, Elias Pina, and Team 2 went to Guayabo, Elias Pina. After the day was finished, we got on the bus and were fortunate enough to be taken to the Hatti border. The yellow concrete marker designates the official border line. We were in two countries at once!

The construction team finished the footers, and are ahead of schedule! They were lucky to have some Dominican help! Some of us are going from mixing Amoxicillin, to mixing mortar at the kitchen site Wednesday.

The doctors and nurses in the Clinic have had a very rigorous schedule. Monday, they saw 70-80 patients, 25 of those were children. Tuesday, they didn't finish their last surgery until 9:45 P.M. Wednesday will also be a very busy day for the doctors...if only we could get those roosters to sleep through the night so the doctors and nurses could too.

We all arrived safely to Santo Domingo-including all of our duffles! Romario Ross missed his connection into Miami, so Bob and Rod drove back to the airport in Santo Domingo and arrived back at the Gran Lina around midnight. After a nice dinner, we retired to bed after a long day of traveling. After breakfast the next morning, we left the hotel around 9:30 A.M. and took our 3 hour bus ride to San Juan. It was shocking to see such a difference in poverty along the way, but what a beautiful place. We unpacked all of the duffle bags, put away all surgical supplies, and organized all the medicine for our first day tomorrow. Adios amigos!
